Health and Safety Equipment
Keeping your equestrian yard safe isn’t just good practice — it’s essential. Having the right health and safety equipment in place helps protect staff, visitors, and horses, ensuring a well-managed, compliant, and professional environment.
Here’s what every yard should have:
1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Proper PPE helps reduce risk during daily activities and horse handling. Essential items include:
- Riding helmets (meeting current safety standards)
- Sturdy boots with a heel and good grip
- Gloves for handling and yard work
- Hi-vis clothing for hacking and outdoor work
- Body protectors or air vests for riding and training
- Weatherproof clothing for outdoor conditions
2. First Aid & Emergency Equipment
Every yard should be prepared for accidents — both human and equine.
- Human First Aid Kit: Fully stocked and easily accessible
- Equine First Aid Kit: Includes bandages, poultices, antiseptics, and a thermometer
- Emergency contact list (vet, farrier, staff, and yard manager)
- Fire extinguishers and fire blankets in key locations
- Clearly marked fire exits and escape routes
- Accident and incident report forms
3. Yard Safety Essentials
Good organisation and the right equipment prevent most accidents.
- Secure and tidy tack storage
- Non-slip flooring in wash bays, stables, and walkways
- Proper lighting throughout the yard and arenas
- Safe tie-up areas with quick-release points
- Safety signage (e.g. “Helmet Required,” “No Smoking,” “Restricted Area”)
4. Horse Management & Handling Safety
- Well-fitted headcollars and lead ropes
- Safe turnout and handling procedures
- Clear working zones for staff and visitors
- Designated isolation areas for sick horses
5. Training & Documentation
Equipment is only effective when everyone knows how to use it.
- Health and safety policy
- Risk assessments and yard checklists
- Emergency and fire procedures
- Staff training records and inductions
✅ Tip:
Review your safety equipment regularly — check expiry dates, restock first aid kits, and inspect tools and PPE for wear and tear. A safe yard is a productive, happy yard!
